Sri Lanka name Rugby Sevens squad for Commonwealth Games 2018

by Saveen Tharinda

Sri Lanka Rugby Sevens team led by experienced campaigner Sudarshana Muthuthanthri will take part in the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia which commences on 4th April.

The 12-member squad will be taking part in one of the most colourful sporting competitions with 70 nations in the Commonwealth empire competing in 26 disciplines.

Sevens rugby will be one of the 15 sporting disciplines in the 21st Commonwealth Games where Sri Lanka would be chasing for a medal.

In this year’s competition, Sri Lanka will field a young outfit while Srinath Sooriyabandara, Danushka Ranjan, Richard Dharmapala and skipper Muthuthanthri will be the only returning players from the 2014 Glasgow edition.

Navy SC forward Adeesha Weerathunga who was impressive in his debut series in Borneo has been picked to bolster the forwards alongside rather experienced Danush Dayan and Muthuthanthri.

The Tuskers will have speed and strength in the back line from Kandy SC duo, Danushka Ranjan and Richard Dharmapala, while the former S. Thomas’ College skipper Naveen Henakankanamage will be a key player to watch out in the wing position.

Peter Woods will once again coach the Lankan outfit with Nic Groube working as the trainer while the team will be under the supervision of high-performance manager Inthi Marikar.

The Tuskers have been grouped alongside Olympic Gold Medal winners Fiji, Wales and Uganda and will play each other in the group stage clashes. The fourth-place finish in the Asia Sevens Series last year that served as a qualifier for the Commonwealth games saw both Commonwealth nations, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, getting their tickets to Gold Coast.
