The highly anticipated Inter-Provincial cricket tournament got underway yesterday at Suriyawewa and Katunayake. Middle-order batsman Roshen Silva’s purple patch with the bat continued as he smashed an unbeaten 146 for Galle against Colombo at Suriyawewa.

After electing to bat first, Galle were in a spot of bother as they slumped to 22 for four. But Roshen, who was the Player of the Series during the recently concluded Test series in Bangladesh, took his team out of trouble with a marathon effort batting for over six hours. Roshen’s unbeaten 146 came off 249 deliveries with ten boundaries.

The 29-year-old added 222 runs for the fifth wicket with Dasun Shanaka, who was leading the side in the absence of Suranga Lakmal, who was ruled out due to a stiff back. Shanaka was unlucky to miss out on a hundred as he was dismissed five runs short of the milestone by Dilruwan Perera.

A 97-run stand for the sixth wicket followed between Roshen and Chaturanga de Silva, who made 47. Galle did well to reach 321 for six at stumps after being 22 for four. Dilruwan finished with two wickets
