Sri Lanka men’s National team will take on the challenge of strong Indonesia in their Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Group-II Relegation Play-off, to be held on April 7 and 8 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association clay courts, Colombo.

The Davis Cup, which is considered the annual World Cup of international men’s tennis, is sponsored by BNP Paribas and is conducted by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

The losing side in this tie will be demoted to zonal Group-III in 2019. Sri Lanka lost the Group-II first-round tie against Thailand 3-2 this February.

Out of the eight nations taking part in Group-II this year, one from Sri Lanka vs. Indonesia tie and one from Iran vs. Chinese Taipei tie, to be held on the same days in Taipei, will be relegated while the winners will stay in Group-II for another year.

Meanwhile Thailand will take on the Philippines and Hong Kong (China) meeting Lebanon, aiming to get promotion to Group-I next year, also on April 7 and 8, in different venues. The winners of those ties will meet in next September finals where the winner will qualify for Asia-Oceania Zone Group-I in 2019.

The annual world champions of the Davis Cup will be picked from the top nations emerging from three global zones, Asia-Oceania, Europe-Africa and Americas.
