Failure to fulfil bail conditions

The Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) yesterday arrested former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage for alleged misappropriation of Rs. 39 mn in the purchase of Carom and Checker-boards from Sathosa in 2014.

The FCID took the MP into custody after recoding his statement yesterday morning. The former minister was produced before the Fort Magistrates’ Court and was ordered to be enlarged on bail. However, as the former Minister failed to fulfil bail conditions he was remanded till this morning.

Aluthgamage arrived at the FCID yesterday morning carrying a plastic bag. When asked by journalists what he was carrying, the said that he was prepared as the FCID was likely to arrest him and produced him court and remanded.

Earlier the former minister as filed a special appeal petition to the Supreme Court requesting the court to prevent the FCID from arresting him. Last week former Chairman of Sathosa, Nalin Ruwanjeewa Fernando, was remanded over the same charges.
