GMOA protest against heart surgeon sans licence to practise

The Galle branch of the GMOA yesterday alleged that though the Health Ministry had been warned of a doctor who performed heart surgeries without a license to practice, no action had been taken against him.

Addressing the media, Dr. Mangala Gunatiilake alleged that the particular individual had practised as a cardiac surgeon in the UK, but he had not been issued with a licence to practise after 2015 and he was a retired doctor.

"The number of patients operated on by this person increased and that prompted us to ascertain the reason," Dr. Gunatillake added.

Gunatillake said a medical practitioner who was not legally authorised to practise in the UK was not permitted to work in Sri Lanka.

If he renewed his license to practise they we will have no issue, he said.
