Sri Lanka’s former Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga, now detained in Dubai, has appealed to Interpol to remove the Red Notice issued on him.

Weeratunga, wanted over his role in the alleged financial fraud in the acquisition of seven MiG 27s by the previous government, has informed Interpol the government action against him was unlawful.

Weeratunga has written directly to Interpol, amidst ongoing negotiations between Sri Lanka and Dubai to extradite to Colombo to face charges in respect of acquisition of fighter aircraft during eelam war IV.
