Glyphosate dangers high

This is in response to the letter of Dr. C. S.Weeraratna, titled "Removal of Glyphosate ban" (5th May).

Glyphosate (GF) is obviously a very effective broad spectrum weed killer and its rate of use worldwide has increased in exponential order.  Sri Lanka has wisely banned Glyphosate to prevent a human health hazard and to save the environmental components.  Though the writer has claimed that no local or foreign research scientists have scientifically proved that glyphosate is the root cause of CKDu, a series of studies have been done by researchers to explore it’s adverse impact on human health and environment. The researchers, based on scientific evidence, have explored the dangers of Glyphosate --- to both human health and the environment.

Argentine scientists found that Glyphosate causes birth defects in frogs and chickens. Doctors in Paraguay and Argentina have reported ill-effects like infertility, still births, miscarriage and cancer in GM (genetically modified) Soy producing areas. A 2010 study involving Indian scientists is in possession of findings that suggest Glyphosate carcinogenic.  A study conducted by Claudia et al revealed " the area planted with glyphosate-resistant crops is increasing and this requires repetitive application of Glyphosate, precaution must be taken since our results indicate that GF may provoke alterations of cellular functions which are indicative of cellular damage, and therefore, is a potential risk factor for human health and the environment".

The study of Lissandra Glusczak et al  showed that the glyphosate concentrations used in agriculture may cause changes in the metabolic and enzymatic parameters of fish, such as AChE inhibition, lipid peroxidation and protein catabolism. According to Dr. Seneff, if glyphosate comes to us through food, it all usually starts at the gut. Directly and indirectly, glyphosate ends up disrupting the gut barrier, causing the leaky gut syndrome, where molecules that should not be able to get out of the gut intestine, does get out.  In the brain, it can trigger the brain immune system to also disrupting the brain barrier, triggering damage to the insulation of the nervous system in the brain and impairing the communication system of the brain and slowing it down. Many of the symptoms suffered by autistic children are common to gut related problems. However, the degree of toxicity depends on level of contamination in food.

Initially numerous regulatory agencies all over the world had practically denied the possibility of any health hazard due to glyphosate and few scientists also advocated that the GM glyphosate-tolerant maize was as safe and nutritious as conventional maize. Only in 2015 the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified Glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen. Glyphosate is not only banned in Sri Lanka, its import has been restricted by El Salvador and Bermuda too. Colombia has declared the usage of Glyphosate to come to a stop. The Chinese Army has reportedly banned all GM foods due to Glyphosate residues. Epidemiological evidence supports strong temporal correlations between glyphosate usage on crops and a multitude of cancers that are reaching epidemic proportions, including breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, kidney cancer, thyroid cancer, liver cancer, bladder cancer and myeloid leukaemia.

Also many scientists have written a series of peer reviewed papers on problems with Glyphosate. So there is clear evidence that the regulatory agencies, who are responsible for defining the safety of foods, did not recommend the actual safety limit of foods based on sound scientific evidence (safety documents) that would ensure absolute no harm to human health. In this context, it is pertinent to recollect the warning of the famous scientist named Sri Bernhard Url --- "Eroding trust in regulatory agencies will not improve democratic accountability and don’t attack science agencies for political gain (Nature553, 381, 2018)" --- which brings to the limelight how scientific assessment is being practically dictated by the corporate brigade. Therefore, scientific truth must not be manipulated simply to maximize the profit of the corporate brigade at the expense of human health and environment in support of high yield. Spraying of herbicides in the soil not only upsets the soil ecosystem, but contaminates aquatic ecosystem also. Many researchers have reported the residual herbicides and pesticides in the water originating from agricultural fields.
