Anniewatte tunnel to be closed indefinitely for repairs

By Cyril Wimalasurendre

KANDY – Kandy Mayor Kesara D. Senanayake said on Wednesday (16) that the Anniewatte tunnel would be closed for motor traffic and pedestrians indefinitely.

Mayor Senanayake told a media conference that the decision was taken due to urgent repairs needed for the tunnel.

While earth slips were taking place at the entrances to the tunnel, its interior too required urgent repairs to prevent major disasters, mayor Senanayake told the media.

Senanayake urged the public to avoid walking through the tunnel and that trishaws should also avoid passing through it.

The Mayor said he would seek the advice of the Engineering Faculty of the University of Peradeniya to commence early repairs to the tunnel.

Meanwhile the closure of the tunnel has caused great inconvenience to the residents of Anniewatta who make use of the tunnel to find transport to Kandy and other areas.

Hundreds of people daily walk through the tunnel to the city and Peradeniya Road since public transport is not available in the area.

The Kandy South Depot of the SLTB has totally stopped the bus service on Anniewatte - Kandy route.

Deputy Mayor Ilahi Abdeen, Opposition leader Sena Dissanayake, council members Matalie Marikkar, Sarath Wijesinghe, Chandrasiri Wijenayake and Municipal Commissioner Chandana Tennakoon were present at the press conference.
