Former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, MP, and Assistant UNP Leader has called for the immediate and complete restructuring of the Central Bank.

Karunanayake said that the national economy could not be properly directed unless the CBSL was revamped. The Colombo District MP said so at a public event in Crows Island on June 3.

Alleging that the CBSL lacked vision to control inflation and was also blind to the vast majority of people struggling to make ends meet.

Karunanayake alleged that as the country was in deep economic crisis due to CBSL’s unilateral decisions, immediate remedial measures should be taken.

The UNPer alleged decision makers at the CBSL had not heeded President Maithripala Sirisena and PM Wickremesinghe’s advice.

Alleging that Sri Lanka lacked plan to attract foreign direct investment, Karunanayake said that high interest rates were driving investors away.

Karunanayake gave up foreign ministry portfolio in early August last year in the wake of revelations made during the hearings of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into treasury bond scams of Feb 2015 and March 2016.
