The Valvettithurai Urban Council has rejected a proposal made by some Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP to build a statue of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran in the area. Valvettithurai was the hometown of Prabhakaran.

The TNA MP has proposed the erection of the statue near Prabhakaran’s ancestral home. While the LTTE was controlling the area a 80-foot flagpole was set up on a play ground near the sea and LTTE flag was flown. After the end of the war security forces removed the flagpole.

The Valvettithurai Urban Council met recently to discuss the proposal for building the statue of the LTTE leader and the majority of the councilors opposed the proposal and some stated that it would be better to construct a playground for children on the site. Chairman of the Urban Council, Karunanandarasa had the proposal to build a playground for children passed.
