Contrary to earlier reports, the police now say Mahesh Chaminda, husband of Gampaha District UNP MP Upeksha Swarnamalini (Paba), wanted in connection with an ongoing inquiry into an attack on the MP on Monday night, is evading arrest. A senior police official told The Island that the suspect was missing and police were looking for him. Upeksha is being treated at the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital. ‘Paba’, who contested the April 2010 General Election on the UNP ticket secured the second highest number of preferential votes in the Gampaha District, but later joined the UPFA government at the vote on the 18th amendment to the Constitution.

Mirihana Police are conducting investigations. Meanwhile, Upeksha has, in a statement to the Women’s and Children’s Bureau of the Police, stated that her husband assaulted her on Monday (Feb. 14).

She has been visited by her family members, relatives as well as numerous actors and actresses.
