Amid reports that Dinesh Chandimal will miss the third cricket Test against the West Indies, to be played from Saturday, June 23, at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados, there is a possibility that Chandimal may play in the Test, the team sources said yesterday.

Chandimal was banned for one Test by the International Cricket Council (ICC), for ball-tampering allegations, after a hearing that took place at the end of the second Test in St. Lucia.

Sri Lanka has appealed against the ICC decision.

"We expect a positive result for our appeal (made against the ban)," said Asanka Gurusinha, Sri Lanka team manager, on Wednesday, June 20.

Sri Lanka team was engaged in a practice session in the Kensington Oval before the third day-night Test which has a historical significance for West Indies cricket as it will be the first day-night Test to be played in the Caribbean.

If Chandimal is to miss this Test, Sri Lanka will need to appoint a captain in place of him for the match.

"Until ICC makes a decision on our appeal, we are not going to appoint a new captain," added Gurusinha.

ICC made another charge against Chandimal, also Tuesday, along with Gurusinha and Sri Lanka coach Chandika Hathurusingha, for breaching its code of conduct by not taking to the field for two hours, in protest over the way the ICC handled Chandimal’s allegation. That was on Saturday, the third day of the Test played in St Lucia.

If found guilty on this second charge, Chandimal could miss further matches, hampering his participation in the series against South Africa, to be played in Sri Lanka in July and August.

West Indies lead the three-match series 1-0. They won the first Test in Trinidad by 226 runs.
