Eight Vadamarachchi fishermen taken in for clashes

By Dinasena Ratugamage

The Vadamarachchi police, yesterday, arrested eight fishermen who had come there from another area started fishing after allegedly threatening the local fishers.

The police said there had been fresh clashes between the outsiders who had come from Vadamarachchi West and local fishermen yesterday morning as the former had not adhered to the regulations promulgated by the authorities.

The leaders of fisher societies in the area said that though there was a ban on outsiders fishing in the area, a large number of fishermen had been issued with special permits to do so, thus aggravating the situation.

The authorities subsequently decreed that even if outsiders had obtained special permission to fish in the area, they still had to obtain membership in the local fishermen’s society.

The clashes erupted when some outside fishers who had not obtained the membership of the local societies entered the area and started fishing.

The police said legal action would be taken against the offenders.
