VIZAG (Andhra Pradesh), July 7:Leading Sri Lankan apparel manufacturing company Brandix’s Indian production facility here is planning to jack up its production capacity by over 50%, and has begun the process to recruit 10,000 additional workers for this purpose.

Brandix Vizag makes knit intimate apparel for women and men, such as briefs, leggings (or yoga pants), T-shirts, vests and bras for top American and European brands. While goods are shipped to Europe, exports to the US are shipped as well as airlifted.

At the moment, 18,000 employees work at this sprawling facility. They include 300 Sri Lankan industrial engineers, production managers and quality controllers, and 16,000 women who have had seven years of schooling and are in the 18-35 age group. This makes Brandix Vizag one of a handful of Indian as well as foreign-owned companies that hire women in such large numbers in this country.

The billion-dollar Sri Lankan company’s CEO Ashraff Omar told Sunday Island: "Of the 10,000 people we plan to recruit over the next 12 to 18 months, 8,500 will be women."

The process of hiring the first lot of 4,000 began a few days ago, with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu releasing a poster in Telugu, the language spoken in Andhra Pradesh, inviting interested candidates to apply and to appear for interviews.

Another 6,000 workers will be employed during the next 12 to 18 months. Construction work to build working space for the new recruits has already begun.

The company has arranged 200 buses to bring the workers from their villages around Vizag and to drop them back. They are provided food at the work place. There is a hospital and a creche, where mothers can leave their children while working and take them back home while leaving. The company organizes regular medical camps to conduct various tests on workers and to provide required medicines.

Brandix employs 40,000 people across 20 locations in Sri Lanka. In addition, it also has production facilities in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Haiti. Three to five thousand people are employed in each of these countries.

Brandix Vizag is a fine example of a Sri Lanka company operating successfully in India. Omar said: "Our success in India is primarily due to the exceptionally talented Indian executives who run our Vizag facility, such as our India Business Partner P Doraswamy and Chief Operating Officer Ragupathy Veeraswamy."

Last year, Brandix Vizag’s turnover was INR 18.50 billion. This year, it is likely to cross the impressive INR 20-billion mark.
