St. Joseph’s College lift Sevens title

St. Joseph’s College won their maiden sevens championship in the history


St. Joseph’s College, Colombo won the Singer U19 Schools Rugby Sevens Championship beating Royal College by 21-12 in the Cup Final worked out at Royal College Sports Complex, Colombo yesterday.


The Josephians remained unbeaten throughout the weekend to topple the strong 15s league champions in an exciting game which saw three yellow cards and one red card been shown by the Referee. 


Imesh Dissanayake scored twice for the winners while Keshan Kavinda touched down once as they led 14-05 at half-time while Janidu Dilshan and Thulaib Hassen planted tries for the Royalists.


St. Joseph’s defeated Science College and St. Anthony’s College in the Quarter Finals and Semi-Finals respectively while Royal College managed to defeat Vidyartha College and Isipathana College on their way to the Finals.


The Josephians led by Sameesha Virangana and coached by Nilfer Ibrahim will savour the victory as they came short in both the League and Knockout tournaments to end up as runner-up.


Meanwhile, Richmond College Galle were crowned Shield champions, Kingswood College Kandy took home the Bowl championship while Vidyartha College stunned last year’s Cup winners S. Thomas’ College to take the Plate championship.
