Church on Internet abuse:  Adults far worse than youth and children

By Shamindra Ferdinando

Parish priest of St. Annes Kurana church Rev Father Cyril Gamini Fernando, in his Sunday sermon, flayed the community, particularly the adults for wrongful use of the internet and a range of applications available today.

Rev. Fernando warned of dire consequences unless the community took remedial measures, promptly, to ensure the internet didn’t ruin their lives.

The former spokesperson for the Catholic church pointed out that the conduct of adults were far worse than that of younger people and children. Quoting a recent survey, Rev Father said that the

internet was responsible for the break up of many marriages and ruination of families.

The priest said that he had observed on many occasion some of those parishioners over 40 struggling to switch off their hand phones during mass. The younger parishioners seemed to be cautious in switching off their hand phones before the commencement of the Sunday mass though the same couldn’t be said about the seniors, the priest said, adding that sometimes it was sort of hilarious how ‘old’ tried to switch off their phones in the middle of service.

The priest suggested that it would be better if parishioners did not bring in hand phones.

The priest also urged the community not to use various applications to slander and especially share defamatory posts, which hurt people. By sharing those defamatory posts, you would be encouraging them to continue their vicious agendas.

Rev. Father Fernando pointed out that some of those humorous posts were in fact meant to slander those who couldn’t defend themselves.

While the priest was advising on the internet use, at least one person was seen checking his hand phone and was obviously deaf to the sermon.
