Colombo Municipal Councillor shot dead

A Colombo Municipal Councillor was shot dead yesterday morning at Sea Street, Colombo by a gunman who had arrived on a motorcycle.


Colombo Municipal Councillor Krishna alias Krishnapillai Kirubanandan (40) representing an independent group was at a fruit stall owned by him near the Adiwal Street junction at Sea Street in Pettah when the gunman shot him in the head around 9 am.


The killer arrived on a motorcycle and was wearing a white helmet. He was loitering near the shop for sometime and as the councillor came in, the suspect went into the stall and shot him at point blank range, according to witnesses.


There were two employees in the stall but none of them could identify the suspect.


The gunman fled the scene after the shooting.


The Councillor had succumbed to his injuries on admission to the National Hospital, Colombo.


Police suspect that the shooting was the result of a dispute over a ganja business.
