KANDY: At least 45 school buildings in the Kandy District are prone to landslides, according to the Disaster Management Centre.

Assistant Director, Kandy District Disaster Management Centre Indika Ranaweera told a seminar for the media on Monday (09) that the education authorities had been informed of the risk faced by the schools.

The school buildings under threat of landslide were mainly in the Nawalapitiya, Kandy Ganagawata Korale and Udadumbara, Ranaweera said.

The education authorities should take the situation seriously and adopt measures to ensure the safety of students and teachers, Ranaweera said, adding that the Kandy District was a region of mountains and slopy lands prone to landslides.

He said builders and elements dealing with land in the district should refrain from obstructing natural water courses.
