Joint Military- Police operations to combat drug trafficking

The government says that the assistance of the Security Forces would be obtained for a specific period, to assist the Police Narcotics Bureau control the trafficking of drugs.


Lands and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Gayantha Karunathillake, addressing the weekly Cabinet Press Briefing at the Information Department on Wednesday , said that based on the Attorney General’s recommendation, President Maithripala Sirisena and Law and Order Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara had jointly presented a memorandum to draft a Drug Controlling Special Provision Bill, to the Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday.


The objective of the proposal, approved unanimously by the Cabinet, he noted was to engage the Tri Forces for a limited duration in the governments drive to eliminate the drug menace.


Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that the sale and use of cocaine, hashish and marijuana had increased.
