Health Minister: No official can reverse Cabinet decision

Health Minister and Cabinet Co-spokesman Dr Rajitha Senaratne said yesterday that the glyphosate ban had been imposed after a Cabinet decision and it could not be lifted at the whims and fancies of the officials.

The Registrar of Pesticides had no power to overrule a Cabinet decision, the minister said.

He said the government had imposed the glyphosate ban in 2015 in view of fears that the weedicide was one of the causes for the killer renal disease prevalent in the North-Central Province and spreading to some other parts of the country.

Later the Plantations Minister obtained Cabinet approval to relax the ban only for the rubber and tea plantations in 2017. However, it has been reported that the Registrar of Pesticides has issued a gazette lifting the ban for all crops. The officials could not take such actions at their will, the minister said.
