Elections to 60 LG bodies postponedFebruary 20, 2011, 10:05 pm

Elections to 60 Local Government bodies have been suspended on legal grounds, Department of Elections said yesterday.
Deputy Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said that Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake had decided against holding elections to 60 institutions on March 17 on legal grounds.
Political parties including the ruling UPFA have moved the Court of Appeal against the rejection of nominations for elections to these Local Government institutions.
New dates would be announced after the Court of Appeal judgments, Deshapriya said.
On March 17, elections would be held only to 241 local government bodies.
The local government institutions to which elections will not be held on March 17 are: Kaduwela Municipal Council, Urban Councils of Maharagama, Kesbewa, Minuwangoda, Lindula-Thalawakele, Chilaw, Embilipitiya, Kegalle, Velvetithurai, Point Pedro, Chavakachcheri and Pradeshiya Sabhas of Homagama, Attanagalla, Agalawatte, Harispattuva, Akurana, Yatinuvara, Wilgamuwa, Ukuwela, Elpitiya, Baddegama, Akmeemana, Akuressa, Seruvila, Kanthale, Kuchchaveli, Nikaveratiya, Polgahawela, Mawathagama, Navagattegama, Vennappuwa, Nuvara Gam palatha, Chilaw, Rajanganaya, Galneva, Elahera, Hingurakgoda, Welikanda, Siyambalanduwa, Moneragala, Ratnapura, Balangoda, Weligepola, Warakapola, Karainagar, Kayts, Delft, Velanai, Walikamam West, Walikamam North, Walikamam South West, Walikamam South, Walikamam East, Point Pedro, Chavakachcheri, Nallur, Pachchileipalli, Karachchi, and Punakari.
