A former commander of the Sri Lanka Army, General Rohan De. S. Daluwatte, passed away yesterday (27th August) at the age of 77 years.

I got to know Dalu as he was popularly known when he was a Captain in the Army which he represented for a number of years in Basketball together with Major General C. Thurairajah, Randiligama and a host of others. He went on to play for Sri Lanka too with distinction and met his wife Jayanthi on the Basketball court. She too represented the country.

Born in Ambalangoda on May 9, 1941, Dalu had his primary education at Dharmapala and later at Ananda where he excelled in Badminton (1957 to 1960), Tennis (1959 to 1960) and also in Cricket as wicket-keeper in 1960.

He was in the Army for 35 years (1963 to 1998) and was awarded many medals in his distinguished career including WWV, RWP, RSP, VSV, and VSP.

Dalu was also Ambassador in Brazil (2002 to 2005), Chancellor of the Kotalawela Defence University and Chairman of the Gems and Jewellery Authority.

He leaves behind his wife Jayanthi and daughter Radiesha.
