All hopes for a medal lies with Sri Lanka Rugby

Sri Lanka Rugby sevens team will carry all hopes of the island nation as they take the field in the Asian Games 2018 in Palembang, Indonesia today.

The team led by forward Sudarshana Muthuthanthri will compete alongside South Korea, United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan in Pool C.

The islanders are yet to win a medal in Asian Games this year as all the participants have failed to make the podium in the 18th edition. Meanwhile in the past, Rugby sevens have not won a medal either.

Sri Lanka will first take on the UAE side and then face the strong South Koreans today before taking on Afghanistan tomorrow in the final group stage clash.

According to their group stage finish, the top two teams from each group will progress to the quarter-finals that will be held later tomorrow. The semi-finals and the finals will then be played on the 1st of September.

In 2014,  Sri Lanka defeated Lebanon and Chinese Taipei in the group stage before losing to South Korea. In the final eight stage, they made a narrow 24-19 win against China before losing to Japan by 40-00. Sri Lanka had to be content with 4th place as they lost out to South Korea once again in the bronze medal clash.
