New Sergeant-at-arms of Parliament assumes duties

Former Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms of Parliament Narendra Mihindukumar Fernando has been promoted to the rank of Serjeant-at-Arms. He is the Sixth Serjeant-at-Arms of Sri Lankan parliament.


The official ceremony to mark the handing over the Mace and official sword to new Sergeant-at-Arms took place according to the parliamentary traditions opposite the Silver Door at the main entrance to the Parliament Chamber in the presence of former Assistant Serjeant-at-Arms Kushan Jayaratne, who was promoted to the rank of Deputy Serjeant-at-Arms of parliament on the same day.


Narendra Fernando, 54, is the third one appointed from the Parliamentary Administration itself (viz. Ronnie Abeysinghe from 1970 – 1996; Wijaya Palliyaguruge from 1996 – 2006). He married with one son and a past pupil of the Isipathana College, Colombo.


New Sergeant-at-Arms counts 36 years in the parliamentary service including 16 years in the Department of the Serjeant-at-Arms. He has served in various capacities/offices in the Administration Department; Legislative Services Department (All Committee Offices, Table Office, Bills Office); Finance and Supplies Department (Supplies and Services Office); Foreign Relations and Protocol Office. He was an Assistant Director (Administration) at the time of appointment to the Post of Assistant Serjeant-at-Arms on 01.01.2002. Later promoted to the Post of Deputy Serjeant-at-Arms on 22.03.2006.
