IGP watches protest from vantage of CCTV for over nine hours

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara had watched Wednesday’s Jana Balaya Colambata protest march, organised by the Joint Opposition, from 2.00pm to 11.30 pm via 12 CCTV cameras, police sources said.

A high ranking police officer said: "The IGP wanted to personally look into the traffic issues, the behaviour of the Police as well as protesters. It was feared that the protest might turn violent but luckily nothing untoward happened. The protestors were peaceful and the police acted with professionalism."

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the JO had accomplished its mission. "We managed to bring a massive crowd. The government now knows the extent of people’s anger."
