Opening batsman Danushka Gunathilaka has come under the spotlight again after he returned home early from the Asia Cup in UAE with a suspicious back injury. Gunathilaka was ruled out of the six-nation competition after he complained about back pain after the national cricket team’s first training session in Dubai.

Now it has emerged that the left-handed top-order batsman was carrying a niggle but didn’t inform the team management prior the departure from Colombo. Suspicion arose about his conduct after the batsman didn’t carry any bats with him for the tour.

Gunathilaka was set to gain substantially by going on the tour although he didn’t play any game. According to the insurance scheme that is in place for contracted players, Gunathilaka will gain all payments due thanks to the ‘loss of income clause.’

Gunathilaka was fined heavily and suspended for six games in August this year after he broke team curfew. He was also suspended last August for being drunk and skipping training. He had turned up at Pallekele International Stadium for an ODI against India without his kit bag after late-night partying.

All-rounder Shehan Jayasuriya who replaced Gunathilaka is also in trouble after he brought his girlfriend for the tour without obtaining prior permission from Sri Lanka Cricket.
