SLT together with Swarmio launches Esports in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) formally signed an agreement with Canada-based Ubique Networks Inc., to launch a high-tech Esports platform in Sri Lanka. The agreement was signed by senior officials from the SLT and Ubique at the Canada House on Wednesday (14), the official residence of the Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.


The SLT eSports Platform will be powered by Ubique’s Swarmio, which is a fully automated and lag-optimized technology for the Esports sector. Speaking at the ceremony, Ajantha Seneviratne, SLT’s Group Chief Marketing Officer said, "SLT is very proud to be involved in this collaboration of such caliber, through this we look forward to creating a successful path related to gaming". He added that the companies are looking forward to other business ventures in the future.


Vijai Karthigesu, CEO of Ubique Networks, said, "This is a very exciting venture that will bring many gamers together across the. SLT’s eSports Platform will allow Sri Lankan gamers to raise their profiles to international levels". He further added, Ubique is currently on a global expansion strategy and Sri Lanka is the first country it has focused in Asia.


The company is supported by the Canadian government, through its research & development program (NRC) and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).


The Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, David McKinnon said, "The Canada House is happy to host this venture, which will bring many opportunities to online gamers in Sri Lanka". He further added, The Canadian government supports a lot of development in Sri Lanka and is happy to support this as well".


Esports, which is competitive multiplayer online gaming, is one of the fastest growing trends in the sports sector, and according to some experts, by 2021 an estimated 500 million people worldwide will watch or actively play some sort of Esports game.
