Sleuths of the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) nabbed two persons along with the second largest haul of heroin ever detected in Sri Lanka, on Thursday night on the Beruwala beach.

The PNB recovered a total of 231 kg and 54 g of heroin from the possession of a 38-year-old and 34-year-old suspects.

The haul was estimated to have a street value of over Rs 2,778 million, said the Police spokesperson.

The suspects are residents of the Beruwala area. Along with the suspects, a boat used to transport the drugs was also taken into custody.

The Navy had assisted the PNB officials in the raid, police said.

Police believe that the two suspects might have received the haul of heroin from a ship and brought it ashore in a boat.

The police suspect the ship had come via Pakistan and hope to obtain the assistance of INTERPOL to trace the vessel.

The police said investigations were being conducted with the help of details recovered from the mobile phones of the suspects and two businessmen who had links to the suspects were identified and they too would be taken into custody soon.

On Aug 31, 2015, Sri Lanka customs seized 250 kilograms of heroin worth $19 million from a container sent from Pakistan. It is considered the largest haul of heroin detected in the country.
