26 member Sri Lanka U19 Rugby squad announced

Text by Saveen Tharinda

Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) have finalized a strong 26-member team to participate in the upcoming Asia Rugby Under 19 Championship, which kicks off in Chinese Taipei next week.

The Asia Rugby Under 19 Championship is Asia’s premier 15’s competition played to find the best in Asia. This year’s tournament will also be a qualifier for next year’s World Rugby Under 20 Championship that will be held in Argentina.

The junior Tuskers will be led by St. Joseph’s College and CR & FC center three quarter, Gemunu Chethiya. He was a part of the team last year as well. He captained the Sri Lanka U18 sevens team for last year’s Youth Commonwealth Games in Bahamas.

Chethiya will be assisted by Wesleyite Dayan Sabar, who will be the key forward for Sri Lanka.

Last year, Chinese Taipei and South Korea opted out of the tournament, hence Sri Lanka played two matches, home and away against Hong Kong in which the junior tuskers were handed massive thrashings.

This time around, Sri Lanka is set to play the hosts, Chinese Taipei, South Korea and favourites, Hong Kong.

The winner of the tournament will make it to the World Rugby U20 World Cup qualifiers.
