Sri Lankan democracy at the crossroads

The above article By Kan Butani conveniently avoided a most important aspect of JR J rule.

"The provisions of the amendment automatically made the incumbent Prime Minister – himself – President, and he was sworn in as President on 4th February 1978. He passed a new Constitution on 31st August 1978 which came into operation on 9th September of the same year which granted the President sweeping –and, according to some critics - dictatorial powers."

"Missing history of referendum ???" i.e. the declaration of a referendum in 1983 to extend the parliamentary and Presidency life to rule after the elected period was over. Not to face a fresh general election or Presidential election. The referendum was marked by corruption.

"R. Premadasa was elected 2nd Executive President when the late J.R. Jayewardene stepped down, defeating Sirimavo Bandaranaike in 1989. He led the UNP to victory at the General Election held in 1989. "

This is the same fear people have that Ranil, who was a JR protégé, knows only to rule by members of parliament bribed by various perks, even robbing our EPF funds or the Central Bank. He can easily buy a two-thirds majority in the House, but he will not have enough funds to bribe all the people of Sri Lanka at a general election, even if one is conducted under him.

This is why we need a general election
