The STF and the Colombo Organised Crime Unit, in a joint operation, on Tuesday, arrested a leading drug dealer known as Sunil Shantha, who had escaped from the Welikade prison on November 11. He was arrested from a hideout in Meemure in Hasalaka along with his teenage daughter and a person who had given him refuge there. Investigations have revealed that the criminal is a member of the gang controlled by underworld Kingpin Makandure Madush, who is operating from Dubai.

The police said an interdicted prison officer had planned Sunil Shantha’s escape.

Police said the interdicted officer had walked into the prison in uniform and escorted Sunil out of it and eight prison officers had been interdicted over the incident.

Sunil Shantha, first detained at the Kegalle prison, was brought to Welikade as he had to appear before Courts in Colombo.

A senior police officer said Sunil Shantha, involved in the distribution of drugs smuggled into the country by the confederates of Makundure Madush, had lived in Athurugiriya.

Before he was arrested by the Police Narcotics Bureau in Horana on an earlier occasion with a haul of drugs with a street value of Rs 50 million, the suspect had been extorting money from wealthy businessmen in addition to drug dealing.
