Police Special task Force (STF) and Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) officials arrested two Bangladeshis yesterday at a luxury house at Kawdana Road, Dehiwala with 275 kilos of heroin with a street value of Rs.4.4 billion. It is the biggest drug bust in the country.

A senior police officer said that the house had been used as their main distribution centre in the country. He added that it was the largest cache of drugs found in Sri Lanka.

The two men had brought the drugs into the country from Afghanistan via sea and air and then had used luxury vehicles to transport heroin to the house in Dehiwala. The two men had also procured valuable properties in Colombo using the money made from the drug racket, according to police.

The two suspects, aged 35 and 38, are being questioned. The raid was carried out under the instructions of PNB head, DIG Sajeewa Medawatte and STF commandant, DIG MR Lateef by SSP Danapala, CI Darmapriya, IP KA Premalal and others.

This is the second time that a Bangladeshi national has been arrested with large quantities of heroin in the Dehiwala area. Earlier this month the PNB arrested a Bangladeshi woman with over 32 kilos of heroin in Dehiwala.

The 23-year-old woman was arrested at a restaurant on Galle Road in Dehiwala and she was in possession of one kilo of heroin at the time of arrest. The police found another 31.329 kilos of heroin hidden in the house she was living in, at Delgahawatta, Ratmalana.
