With tourist arrivals increasing at apace, after the end of the 30-year separatist war, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) says it needs to immediately find at least 1,500 tourist guides. SLTPB Managing Director Dilip Mudadeniya told The Island that 3,000 guides would be needed in the next 5 to 6 years as tourist arrivals in the next 5 to 10 years were expected to hit the 2,5 million mark.

He said that 1,500 tourist guides had renewed their registration and the SLTPB was discussing with the Tourist Guides’ Association about increasing its cadres, with a view of having the services of a guide for every tourist.

Mudadeniya said that the recruitment of guides was top priority and the Bureau would be targeting retired personnel like professors, lecturers, degree holders, teachers etc. for recruitment and training. Persons with knowledge of multiple languages would be considered. Apart from English, the other languages that required for guides are: German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Russian and Chinese.

He said that Sri Lankan expatriates too may be interested in getting into the industry as tourist guides. Discussions are underway with the relevant authorities regarding the guidelines to improve various hotel service providers. Discussions on investments too are on and progressing well, he said.
