New power set on track from March 10

Of the 20 power sets, valued at US $ 3.5 million, ordered from India, by the Railways Department, three have already arrived. The rest are expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2012.

The three power sets, which were delivered, consist of state-of-the-art technology and all required facilities.

Transport Minister Kumara Welgama told The Island that train commuters would be now able to travel in comfort. For proper maintenance of the new trains, three running sheds are to be built in Galle, Aluthgama and Colombo.

He added that the power sets had been manufactured in 2010 by an Indian ICF company with special features including, easy carriage connection, resistance to vibration, and a comfortable carriage structure.

Welgama said that unlike other railway carriages, the new ones were 70 feet in length. One train would comprise six carriages. A second class carriage would hold 72 passengers while 92 could be power sets would be in operation from March 10 beginning from Matara.
