* Casting of postal votes on March 8 and 9 : Certifying officers must be on duty, Polls Chief says

Certifying Officers engaged in marking postal ballot papers and delivery to post offices on March 8 and 9, in connection with the March 17 Local Government Elections, have been instructed by the Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake to be on duty on those two days.


A spokesman for the Elections Secretariat told The Island that Returning Officers had informed Secretaries of all political parties and independent groups to appoint an agent each to office of Certifying Officers where marking of postal ballots would take place.


The Certifying Officers have been instructed to commence the marking of ballot papers on March 8, which may be extended to the following day depending on the number of applicants.
