PCoI to summon ex-Chairman of SriLankan

By Rathindra Kuruwita

The Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) probing irregularities at SriLankan Airlines, SriLankan Catering and Mihin Lanka will summon former CEO of national carrier Suren Ratwatte to question him on the cancellation of Airbus A350-900 leases in 2016.

Chairperson of the PCoI Anil Gooneratne made this announcement after Yasantha Dissanayake, Head of Financial Management at SriLankan stated that he was not fully aware of the particulars of the cancellation.

"I wasn’t even privy to the minutes of board meetings until this PCoI started. So, I don’t know the thought process of this," he said.

Secretary to the Cabinet of Ministers, Sumith Abeysinghe earlier revealed that Cabinet of Ministers had not been informed of the decision to cancel four Airbus A350-900 leases in 2016.

Abeysinghe said the Cabinet had been informed of the decision to terminate the agreement in 2016, but further developments had not been intimated.

In 2013, the previous management of SriLankan decided to purchase new A350 wide-body aircraft. In 2016, the management, appointed by the new government, cancelled the first four Airbus A350-900 leases. It was speculated that SriLankan would have to pay over USD 90 million as a penalty.
