As the only person who has so far sought SLPP nomination to contest 2019 presidential election, wartime Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa will address a public rally in Badulla tomorrow (March 17).

Among those scheduled to address the gathering expected to commence at 3pm at the Badulla Postal Auditorium are senior attorney-at-law Razik Zarook, one-time UN staffer Mohan Samaranayake, lecturer Madhavi Herath, Dr. Seetha Arambepola and Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

SLPP Chief Basil Rajapaksa, on Wednesday (13), commended his brother Gotabaya for coming forward to contest the presidential election.

Organised by ‘Eliya’, Badulla meeting will be the third since Gotabaya Rajapaksa stepped up his efforts with recent meetings at Divulapitiya and Geli Oya, where the overwhelming majority of UPFA MPs representing the Gampaha and Kandy Districts, respectively, participated at the events.

The group of UPFA MPs representing Badulla District comprises Nimal Siripala de Silva, Lakshman Seneviratne, Thenuka Vidanagamage and National List MP Dilan Perera.

Recently, Gotabaya Rajapaksa denied media reports pertaining to him joining the UPFA on stage on March 07 in Kandy.

According to Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Office a series of ‘Eliya’ meetings have been planned in quick succession over the next couple of months.

Nominations for presidential election are scheduled to be called later this year.

Meanwhile, a countrywide SLPP programme is scheduled to begin today (March 16) to mobilse public support as part of the overall preparations for forthcoming presidential and parliamentary polls.

Basil Rajapaksa said that the programme titled ‘A conversation with the village’ would be held on March 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31.
