‘Spiritual healing’ camp snatches the life of third victim

Another person who was taken ill while taking part in a ‘spiritual healing’ camp over the weekend in Horowpathana Ruwanweli Central College, passed away Sunday night at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.

Victim T.B. Wijetunga, was a 52-year-old resident of Vijithapura, Kalawewa, Anuradhapura. With his demise the number of people who died while taking part in the programme has risen to three.

Wijetunga was hospitalized, on Saturday, after he had fainted on the open playground of the school. The police said that the area was without adequate shelter against the hot sun. The victim was sent to Horowpathana rural hospital first and was then transferred to Anuradhapura. Twelve others who had been admitted to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital were discharged yesterday evening.

The police said that more than 25,000 persons suffering from chronic illnesses and their families had arrived at the Horowpothana Ruwanweli Central College from many places across the country. The event commenced at around 2 pm on Saturday and continued until Sunday noon.

Earlier, A.M. Ranawaka (78), a resident of Dikhenawatta, Urala, Wanduraba, Galle and P. Dinusha de Silva (39), a resident of Abrapura, Mahawaskaduwa, Kalutara died after being hospitalised.
