Floods ruin more than 100,000 acres of cultivated land

More than 100,000 acres of cultivated lands have been affected by recent floods, State Minister of Agriculture Vidura Wickramanayake said yesterday.

He said that most of the affected lands were paddy cultivations located in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Vanni districts as well as in the Eastern Province.

Wickramanayake said that farmers affected by the floods would be compensated and that the government had commenced assessing the damage already and the compensation would be paid through the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board.

It might also lead to a shortage of rice in the coming months, which in turn could lead to an increase in prices, the State Minister said.
