Justice, Human Rights and Legal Reforms Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva says that following the release of recordings of phone conversations between MP Ranjan Ramanayake and various judges, the people’s trust in the judiciary has eroded and action should be taken immediately to restore it.

"People have lost faith in the judiciary following the release of the voice clips; Action should be taken immediately to cleanse the justice system and this could be done only by reforming the existing Constitution," the Minister said while addressing a public gathering at Uva Paranagama on Sunday.

Taking action to ensure the independence of the judiciary alone is not enough. It has to be ensured that the people have their faith in the judiciary.  "The situation could be rectified only by introducing far-reaching reforms to the Constitution. We should bring in constitutional reforms to ensure the independence of the police and the judiciary.

"Without getting the Constitution right we will not be able to move forward as a nation. The so-called independent commissions set up by the 19th Amendment to the Constitution have proven to be a mess."
