The majority of UNP MPs would thwart further attempts to deny party leadership to Opposition leader, Sajith Premadasa, UNP parliamentarian Harshana Rajakaruna said yesterday answering a question posed by a journalist at a press conference at the Opposition leader’s office.

"There is no point in appointing leadership councils. We already have very little time till the coming general election and the current party leadership must immediately make Premadasa the UNP leader. I hope that this decision will be taken by the party on Thursday," he said.

Rajakaruna said that the UNP should rally its supporters in order to win the coming election.

MP Bandula Lal Bandarigoda, who also addressed the briefing, said that although they had no intention of leaving the party, such drastic measures might be needed if Premadasa was not given the party leadership.

"Premadasa wants to lead the party without any division. But he also has the responsibility to be fair by the 5.6 people who voted for him.
