Around 95 State-run hospitals in the North, East and the estate sector have remained closed for the past five years due lack of resources.

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, has expressed dissatisfaction at this poor state of affairs and instructed Ministry Secretary Dr. Ravindra Ruberu to take immediate action to refurbish the hospitals and reopen them. He has ordered that adequate doctors, nurses and paramedics be appointed to those hospitals immediately.

Minister Sirisena told The Island that he had come to know recently that about 95 hospitals in the North, East and the estate sector had been closed for the past five years as the Healthcare Ministry had approved their closure due to lack of medical and surgical equipment, doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians and minor staff.

He pointed out that closure of hospitals for want of resources would aggravate problems because more patients visited other State-run hospitals for treatment. It was the bounden duty of Health Ministry officials to open more hospitals instead of having them closed, he said.
