Steps have been taken by the Vavuniya District Secretariat to return the vehicles hijacked and later abandoned by the LTTE,Vavuniya District Secretary Mrs. P. S. M. Charles said.

The Vavuniya District Secretariat has received 120 abandoned vehicles and is waiting for their owners to make claims, she said. The vehicles found abandoned throughout the districts had been handed over to the District Secretaries by the armed forces.

"Finding owners have become a difficult task since the vehicles do not have their number plates," Charles said. To prevent false ownership claims, the District Secretariat has requested the Commissioner of Motor Traffic to trace the owners or for the owners to produce the necessary documents, especially the registration certificate, issued by the Commissioner of Motor Traffic.

Responding to a query, Mrs. Charles said that so far only one person had proved ownership and claimed his vehicle. The abandoned vehicles now in the custody of the Vavuniya District Secretariat are mostly motorcycles and tractors.
