Opinion poll: 75% of Lankans opposed to MCC

An opinion poll conducted by the four- member committee appointed to review the proposed Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact (MCC) has found that 75 percent of country’s population were against Sri Lanka signing the agreement with the US.

The final report of the Expert’s Committee was handed over to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat on Thursday.

Respondents were from the opinion poll have expressed their approval for the signing of the agreement.

The polls had selected respondents from intellectuals organisations, civil organisations, trade unions and general population.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed the committee with Cabinet approval and Prof. Lalithasiri Gunaruwan of the University of Colombo is the Chairman of the Committee while former Secretary to the Ministry of Transport Dr. D. S. Jayaweera, President’s Counsel Justice Nihal Jayawardena and architect Nalaka Jayaweera are the other members.

The final report by the expert’s committee was made public yesterday (28).

The President’s Office said the proposed agreement was available on the President’s website and the President’s Media Division website.
