While the Sajith Premadasa camp keeps blowing hot and cold, National Organiser aspirant Ranjith Maddumabandara said yesterday that the New UNP Working Committee, which was in the process of taking shape, is illegal.

Asked if he would be contesting the National Organiser’s post when the Working Committee meets again on May 3, he told The Island that the issue at hand was that in terms of the new UNP constitution, the election of the National Organiser was a task that had been entrusted to the Interim Working Committee. "In the present circumstances any appointments made to the New Working Committee are illegal."

Questioned if legal action was being contemplated, Madduma Bandara said that he was weighing his options.

Asked if his campaign to be elected as National Organiser was losing steam, now that Premadasa has secured the Joint Deputy Leader’s post, Madduma Bandara said that was not so and he will stake his claim on May 3.

However, informed sources said that Wickremesinghe was determined to appoint Ravi Karunanayake as the National Organiser and would have his way, considering Premadasa’s "new found consensual approach."

On Wednesday, Wickremesinghe nominated 16 of the 20 persons he was entitled to appoint to the new 92-member Working Committee. With the new body already taking shape and Premadasa yet to voice his opposition, it appears Wickremesinghe has stolen a march on his opponents, the sources said.

Among those Wickremesinghe has not reappointed to the Working Committee are Rosie Senanayake, Thalatha Athukorale, Irwin Weerakkody, Lal Gamage, Imtiaz Bakeer Marakar, Buddhika Pathirana and Dunesh Gankanda.

Those reappointed to the WC include Karunasena Kodittuwakku, Suranimala Rajapaksa, Ananda Kularatne, M. H. M. Mahroof, Milroy Perera, M. Ram, Srinal de Mel, Chanaka de Silva, Ranjan Ramanayake, Ronald Perera and Niroshan Perera.
