The Public Health Department has decided to maintain records of medical history of all workers in restaurants from cooks to cashiers. Chief of the Public Health Department (PHD), Colombo Municipal Council, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said on Thursday (7) that the PHD would issue cards to be filled with medical details of workers.

He said the cards would include basic information regarding the food handler, previous immunisation history, details of physical examinations including reports on cardio vascular, respiratory, central nervous systems and lab reports on stools, sexually transmitted diseases, hepatitis etc. Once they received medical clearance they would also be given a card to identify them as registered food handlers, he said.

Dr. Kariyawasam said precautions would be taken prior to the issue of trade licences to hotels, restaurants and eating houses, to ensure food safety. Kariyawasam said that approximately ten hotels had been licensed.

There were over 750 hotels, restaurants and eating houses in the city, he said.
