All Saints' Church, Borella celebrates 3000th Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual HelpMay 3, 2011, 9:46 pm
The well known shrine at All Saints Church, Borella, in the Catholic Archdiocese of Colombo, is scheduled to commemorate the three thousandth novena of devotion to Holy Mary, the Mother of Perpetual Help on Wednesday the 6th of July 2011.
These novenas have been held every Wednesday, without a break, from the inception of the devotion on the 8th of December 1951. The novenas are collective prayer meetings. Catholics and even non-Catholics believe that, the shrine in general and the icon in particular, have miraculous powers. Every week there are a large number of requests or petitions for help and many letters of thanksgiving.
A glittering ceremony, attended and officiated by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, The Archbishop of Colombo, is being organised for the 6th of July 2011 to celebrate this landmark event. As a prelude to the main celebrations, nine preparatory novenas would be held starting from the 11th of May 2011. Many other activities are also planned as overture events prior to the main celebration on the 6th of July 2011.
As a preliminary event, a dedicated web site www.allsaints.info would be launched in the premises of All Saints Church at 5.00 pm on Wednesday the 4th of May 2011.
The organisers wish to inform the general public that all are welcome to this momentous occasion, all subsequent events and the grand finale on the 6th of July 2011.
