The Department of Census and Statistics is planning to recruit 65,000 officials to carry out the census scheduled for this year, the Department’s Director H. R. Gunasekara told The Island yesterday.

"The officials will be appointed by the Divisional Secretaries of the respective areas. Instructions have been issued to recruit persons who have sat the GCE Advanced Level examination," Gunasekara said.

He said that the officials need not be government servants but should be from the areas concerned.

This year the census would be carried out in three stages. The first two stages of documenting the building and listing of people, done by the Grama Niladaris, had been completed to a considerable extent, he said.

The enumeration stage would commence in a few days and the officials recruited would have to visit each and every house in their area and collect their basic and housing information, he said.

"The significance in this year’s census was that it was the first island wide census held after 30 years. This census was to be completed by the final quarter of the year," Gunasekara said.
