Northerners have shown World they can stand on their own - Wimal

Minister of Housing, Construction Engineering Services and Common Amenities Wimal Weerawansa says that the people of the North who had lost their homes, due to the three decade-long war against the Tiger terrorists, have built their own homes with State loans together with their savings and labour. He said they had shown the world that they can stand on their own feet and meet any challenge.

He made this comment when handing over the ownership of houses, constructed by the NHDA in the Araviyal Nagaral Housing Project, in the Kilinochchi district. The complex comprising 50 houses was opened by Hambantota District Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.

This project was completed within eight months to settle 50 displaced families of the North. Each family was given a loan of Rs. 350,000, while the government spent Rs. 17,500,000 on the entire project. The beneficiaries too had spent over Rs. 10,000,000 from their savings for the construction of their houses. In addition. Rs. 10,000,000 had been spent for side drains of roads, tube wells and sanitary facilities.

Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa said that peace had dawned on the people of the North as well as the entire country with the defeat of Tiger terrorism.

Minister Weerawansa also opened the new NHDA district office at Mullativu.
