The Kokavil telecommunication transmission tower will be declared open on June 6 providing television, radio and telecommunication coverage to the entire Northern Province, Chairman of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) Anusha Palpita said.

"The test transmissions, by the State owned Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, Rupawahini Corporation and the Independent Television Network, commenced in April. The privately owned TV, Radio and telecommunication networks will be able to function in the Northern Province by the end of August," he said.

The Kokavil telecommunication tower was constructed at a cost of Rs. 330 million by the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau to replace the old telecommunication tower in Kilinochchi, destroyed by the LTTE during the war.

Palpita said that depending on the success of transmission of Kokavil tower the TRC is planning to construct more towers at Pidurutalagala, Yatiyantota and in several other areas.

"The TRC is also planning to commence the constructions of the ‘Lotus’ multipurpose tower at Peliyagoda in September at a cost of US$ 120 million," he said.

Both projects are entirely funded by the TRC, he said.
